It is at points like this where biology begins to resemble archaeology in some ways. That the deeper we go (and the further back) we find the discoveries in smaller and smaller pieces. Our bodies seem to have multiple strata that become more and more mysterious to us as we dig down. A purely poetic viewpoint of course. But evolution is imperfect. Sometimes it leaves us with bricked-up windows, or foundations that don't quite match the walls.
